Anna Catharina von Passow , b. von der Lühe , stage name Jomfru Materna , also Materne (born January 25, 1731 in Copenhagen , † September 3, 1757 in Copenhagen) was a Danish actress and author .

Life

Anna Catharina was the child of Lieutenant Friedrich von der Lühe (around 1705–1750) from impoverished landed gentry. From 1748 to 1753 she was part of the first ensemble of the Royal Theater under Ludvig Holberg . Since acting was considered improper for a young noblewoman, she took the stage name Materna . She was considered the prima donna of the ensemble, but was also the focus of numerous intrigues and rumors.

In 1753 she took her leave of the stage and married Christian Albrecht von Passow (1732–1777) on December 29th. He came from the Passow family , who had come to Denmark from Mecklenburg , and was the son of Colonel and fortress commander Carl Albert von Passow and grandson of General Hartwig von Passow . When her husband went to Tranquebar as the captain of the Danish East India Company , she stayed behind, appeared again in February 1757 at the premiere of the first Danish musical play, Gram og signe , and published dramas as a woman's writer . Her translation of the History of Cleveland into Danish was not published until after her death.
