The Cambridge trolleybus is the trolleybus operator of the City of Cambridge , United States . There, operates transport companies Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) four lines electric, one of them leads to the neighboring town Watertown . They are supplemented by various bus routes from the same company.
history
Cambridge originally shared a trolleybus network with the neighboring city of Boston , where the first trolleybuses ran as early as 1933. On April 11, 1936, the Boston network was expanded beyond the city limits to Cambridge, further routes - also within the city of Cambridge - followed. Between 1958 and 1963, the extensive Boston trolleybus network was shut down, while the routes in Cambridge have been preserved to this day.
A new system has existed in Boston since 2004. This trolleybus Boston is in turn operated by the MBTA, but has no connection to the remaining network in Cambridge.
Harvard Bus Tunnel
A local specialty is the so-called Harvard Bus Tunnel under the Harvard University campus . This is a 400-meter-long former tram tunnel , in which buses now run in addition to the trolleybuses. The Harvard transfer station in the area of Harvard Square is also integrated into the tunnel , where all trolleybus routes in Cambridge are linked to the Red Line subway line, which is also part of the MBTA . Because there is also a bus platform in an island location, all trolleybuses have an additional entrance on the left.
