Coimbra trolleybus
The Coimbra trolleybus is the oldest and now the only trolleybus operator in Portugal . The operating company is the municipal transport company Serviços Municipalizados de Transportes Urbanos de Coimbra , abbreviated to SMTUC .
History and present
The Coimbra plant was opened on August 16, 1947, initially with only two Saurer cars . Until 1959, this was the only trolleybus system in Portugal, since the cessation of operations in Porto in 1997, this has been the case again. Today eleven Caetano Efacec solo trolleybuses operate on two lines in Coimbra ; they were built between 1984 and 1986. One of them comes from Porto (car 71, built in 1983, formerly number 74). He came to Coimbra in 1997 after the company ceased there. A renewal of the vehicle fleet is planned, but so far only a single Solaris Trollino 12 has been purchased.
In 2013, the STMUC's timetable restrictions resulted in reduced trolleybus traffic. Operation was completely shut down during the summer holidays and there were no trolley buses on the weekends either. Diesel buses drove as replacements. On working days outside of the summer holidays, there was mixed traffic with diesel and trolley buses, with only three to four courses being electric.
