The Oberwegsteine (Czech: Horní Skaly or Obrvégry ) are a group of rocks in the Czech part of the Lusatian Mountains south of Hrádek nad Nisou ( Grottau ) near the Horní Sedlo ( Pass ). They are located on the southern slope of the Hřebeny mountain , about 500 meters above sea level. The rock group consists of eight individually standing sandstone rocks west of the Hrádek nad Nisou– Jablonné v Podještědí road . This location gave rise to the name of the rock group. The sandstone comes from the Cenomaniac , the oldest stage of the Upper Cretaceous Period, and is usually very rich in quartz. It also contains calcareous binders. With a few exceptions, this rock is very solid with a smooth surface.

The most important towers are the Great Goddess of Death ( Velká Smrtka , also known as the Great Dead Stone) and the Reichenberg Tower ( Liberecká věž ).

Climb

Like the neighboring Rabensteine , the Oberwegsteine are one of the most important climbing destinations in the Bohemian part of the Lusatian Mountains. In autumn 1904 all of the free-standing rocks were first climbed by Rudolf Kauschka and his companions. Only the Gahler Tower ( Gahlerova věž ), the hardest rock to climb, could only be climbed on May 20, 1906. The rock was named after Adolf Gahler, a climber who died in an accident in the Alps.
