The Fellerwand in the Rabenstones

The Rabensteine ( Vraní skály or Krkavčí skály ) are the second important group of seven free-standing rocks, near Hrádek nad Nisou (German Grottau ). They are located about 500 m above sea level above the Kaisergrund ( Krásný důl ), in the Lusatian Mountains , about one kilometer west of Horní Sedlo (German: pass ). Like the neighboring rocks of the Oberwegsteine , they consist of a very solid sandstone with some very pebbly conglomerate layers . The sandstone comes from the Cenomaniac , the oldest stage of the Upper Cretaceous Period, and is usually very rich in quartz.

The specialty of this rock group is the deep cut between the north and south part of the group. This crevice was created by volcanic influences. As a result, the sandstone was fritted on the inside of the crevice and is particularly solid.

The northern group of rocks is dominated by the most important rock of the group, the Feller wall ( Fellerova věž ). The southern part is dominated by the raven ( Krkavec ) and the tall raven stones , also called shaft towers ( Šachtové věže ). Another imposing appearance is the difficult to climb Bergfreikuppe, which is also called pear ( Hruška ) because of its shape .

Climb

Due to their imposing appearance and the solid rock, the rocks aroused interest in climbing them at the end of the 19th century. On May 12th, 1895, Professor Theodor Feller from Zittau, together with Adolf Gahler and Ferdinand Siegmund, managed to conquer the Fellerwand with the help of a specially made rope ladder. The first ascent of the wall without aids was carried out on May 21, 1904 by the two students Karl Kirchhof and Franz Salomon. The other peaks were conquered by 1910, mainly by Rudolf Kauschka's circle of friends . There are now many trails up to the tenth Saxon level of difficulty .
