The Observation Bluff (English for observation cliff ) is a 110 m high cliff on Signy Island in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . It rises at the eastern end of a non-iced mountain ridge that flanks the north side of Paal Harbor .
Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations carried out rough surveys in 1933. This was done in more detail in 1947 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey . The cliff was used by the survey staff to observe the sea ice situation on a daily basis , which is what gives it its name.
