The Oceanário de Lisboa is the Oceanarium of Lisbon . It houses the largest indoor aquarium in Europe. It is located in the Park of Nations directly on the Tagus , on the former site of Expo 98 . At that time the marine aquarium was the main attraction of the world exhibition , which had the motto "The oceans: A legacy for the future".

The building stands in the middle of a water basin. It extends over two floors around a very large central main aquarium. In addition to several types of sharks and rays, it also houses a school of tuna , sardines and sunfish . In addition to the main tank, specific sea creatures from all corners of the world's oceans can be seen in many smaller aquariums. The four corners of the Oceanário are each dedicated to specific regions, for example there is an Antarctic corner with penguins and an artificial glacier , a basin with a pair of sea otters and a “ mangrove forest ” corner.

In 2011 an additional building (“edifício do mar”) was added, which now houses the entrance, an auditorium and a restaurant. It is connected to the main building ("edifício dos oceanos") by a connecting bridge. Changing themes are presented in the aquariums of the additional building.

The Oceanário can be reached both by metro and by the suburban trains of the CP to Oriente station .
