Ocumare del Tuy is a Venezuelan city, the administrative seat of the Tomás Lander district, in the state of Miranda . The city is located in the Tuy Valleys. In 2005 Ocumare del Tuy had about 166,112 inhabitants.
history
The Parroquia of Ocumare del Tuy was founded in 1693.
Ocumare del Tuy had 4692 inhabitants in 1810. There were many slaves, but there were also immigrants from mainland Spain and the Canary Islands.
Several battles of the Wars of Independence took place here. On February 11, 1814, the Spanish army, led by Francisco Rosete and Boves, occupied the village. The slaves were on the side of the Spaniards and murdered many people. Over 300 people were killed in the process. It was not until February 14, 1814, that José Feliz Ribas was able to drive out the troops from Rosete and Boves.
Between 1904 and 1927, Ocumare was the capital of the state of Miranda.
politics
Since 2008 the mayor of the PSUV politician is Julio César Marcano. He won with 69.92% of the vote against 27.92% for the opposition candidate. In 2010, 66.95% of voters voted for the PSUV candidate.
