Odin is a space telescope for astronomical and aeronomic investigations in the radio and submillimeter range.
The satellite is a Swedish- led project with participation from Canada , France and Finland . The satellite was launched on February 20, 2001 with a Start-I rocket from Svobodny in Siberia. Odin is in a sun-synchronous earth orbit , which leads at about 600 km above the poles of the earth. Odin was originally designed to last for two years, but has now been in operation for more than 18 years.
The antenna diameter is 1.1 m. Observations are possible in one frequency band 486.1–503.9 GHz , three overlapping bands from 541.0–580.4 GHz and one band from 118.25–119.25 GHz. This enables investigations of water and oxygen in the interstellar medium in particular .
