Odori ebi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Odori ebi ( Japanese 踊 り 蝦 , English “dancing shrimp”) is a Japanese sashimi live preparation ( ikizukuri ).

This dish contains live baby prawns with their legs and antennae still moving. The dish must be prepared quickly so that the prawns are still alive when served. They are usually dipped in sake to numb them. The live shrimp are then dipped in a special dip sauce at the table and then quickly bite into the animal to kill it.

Since shrimp are not vertebrates, the preparation of Odori ebi does not comply with the criminal offense of animal cruelty under German law .
