The Oenosandridae are a family of butterflies , within the superfamily Noctuoidea . The group was originally assigned to the processionary moths (Thaumetopoeinae), as the females also carry an anal bush at the end of the abdomen. The shape of this hair differs, however, which is why the originally only genus of the family, Oenosandra , was raised to family rank. Currently, three species of the genus Oenosandra and five of the genus Discophlebia are known, which are native to Australia .

features

The genus Oenosandra is assumed to be a sister group to all other groups of the Noctuoidea . The autapomorphism of the group is a single bristle in the middle of the back of the third thoracic segment of the caterpillars and the arrangement of the hook rings on the abdomen . The moths show a sexual dimorphism . The genus Discophlebia differs significantly from this genus, especially with regard to the laying of eggs and the shape of the chorion of the eggs, but is also included in the Oenosandridae family.

The eggs of the Oenosandridae have fine elongated structures. They are deposited in groups, the clutch being covered with wool from the anal bush. The gregarious caterpillars rest during the day below loose bark their food trees, eucalyptus ( Eucalyptus ). They are nocturnal and feed on the old leaves of the plants.
