Open multipurpose bulk carrier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The open multi-purpose bulk carrier (English Open hatch bulk carrier ) is a type of ship that can be used to transport bulk cargo , bulk cargo and sometimes also containers .

details

Open multi-purpose bulk carriers are a sub-type of the bulk carrier with a double hull , box-shaped hold and full deck opening . Due to their design as an open ship without a substructure , they offer the possibility of vertical access to the entire hold, which enables the transport of bulk goods, project cargoes and various bulk cargo, for example forest products such as wood, cellulose or paper or steel products, as well as the transport of containers on the ConBulk ship enables. Ships of this type usually have either cranes or gantry cranes for cargo handling . Some of the ships are used on fixed routes, often with unpaired cargo volumes, but the majority of the ships are usually employed in tramp shipping .

The world's first open multi-purpose bulk carriers were the ships Besseggen and Rondeggen of the Norwegian shipping company Chris Østberg , which were delivered in 1962 and 1963 . They were specially designed for the transport of press printing paper and built at the Kaldnes Mekaniske Verksted shipyard in Tønsberg.
