The Ogilvie Mountains are a mountain range in the Yukon Intermountain Ranges north of Dawson . 99% of them are in the Canadian Yukon Territory and one percent in Alaska .
With an extension of 223 km in the north-south and 393 km in the east-west direction, they cover an area of 43,088 km². The highest mountain is Mount Frank Rae with 2362 m.
The north and south flanks of the Ogilvies are fundamentally different. The sedimentary rock of the north flank remained ice-free during the last Ice Age and is characterized by deep valleys and scree fields created by water. The southern flank consists of darker, less overgrown, igneous intrusive rock with more rugged and steeper slopes.
Large parts of the mountain range are in the Tombstone Territorial Park . The Dempster Highway from Dawson to Inuvik on the Mackenzie Delta crosses the Ogilvie Mountains. The mountain range was named after William Ogilvie, a Canadian surveyor who carried out the first surveys on site at the end of the 19th century.
