Ohauroro Island , also known as Peach Island , is an island in Whangaroa Harbor on the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The 490 m long and up to 300 m wide island is located in the northern part of Whangaroa Harbor , around 3 km north-northeast of the Whangaroa settlement , in the middle of the fairway and only a few hundred meters south of the narrow part of Takahi Point . Southwest of the island, which rises steeply to a height of 116 m and has a size of 11.3 hectares, is the slightly larger island of Milford Island , which is also called Wairaupo Island .
Administratively, the island is part of the Far North District of the Northland region .
Māori reserve
The island was the site of a Pā des Hapū Ngatirua from Iwi Ngati Kahu and is now under protection because of its importance for the Māori as " Ohauroro Island Māori Reserve & Pā ".
Ecological reserve
The southern part of the island, which has a forest, has been designated as an ecological reserve by the Department of Conservation (DOC).
