The eared owls ( Asio ) are a genus of the real owls (Strigidae). The genus is distributed worldwide with eight recent species. They are medium to large sized owls. Most eared owls are nocturnal and primarily hunt small mammals. The short-eared owl ( Asio flammeus ) and the long-eared owl ( Asio otus ) live in Europe .
