Olšany (German Wolschan ) is a locality in the Prague district Žižkov .

history

The first mentions come from the 13th century, when the village belonged to the Milevsko Monastery , which was founded around 1187; at that time the village consisted of only a few farms. After the plague broke out in Prague in 1680, they looked for a new burial site, which was then found in Olšany. The St. Rochus Church, which was built in 1682 and has been preserved to this day, dates from this period. In 1788 the village was subordinated to the newly created municipality Viničné hory.

From the middle of the 19th century, Olšany belonged to the municipality of Vinohrady in the Karolinenthal district , when this municipality was divided, the district of Olšany was added to the new municipality of Žižkov in 1875 . From 1884 the village belonged to the Royal Vineyards District . At the end of the 19th century, Olšany was completely absorbed by Žižkov. In 1922 Olšany was annexed to the city of Prague together with Žižkov.

Only the Olšanské náměstí square , Olšanská ulice and above all the Olšany Cemetery ( Olšanské hřbitovy ), the largest burial place in Prague, remind of the old village .
