Olaf Zenker

Olaf Zenker (* 1973 in Sasolburg ) is a German ethnologist .

Life

In 1999 he obtained the MSc in Social Anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Science (Master's thesis: Bewitchedful thinking: witchcraft and political instrumentalism in the Northern Province of South Africa ), in 2002 the Master's in German and Social Anthropology at the University of Hamburg (Master's thesis: Techniques for communicative creation of group membership: A conversation analysis about image work with the homeless ) and in 2008 the doctorate in social anthropology at the University of Halle-Wittenberg (Dissertation: Irish / ness is all around us: the Irish language and Irish identity in Catholic West Belfast ) (reviewer : Günther Schlee and Richard Rottenburg ). After his habilitation in social anthropology in 2015 at the University of Bern (mentor: Julia Eckert ), he taught as a junior professor (W1) at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Free University of Berlin from 2015 to 2017 . Since 2017 he has been a professor at the Institute for Social Anthropology at the University of Friborg .

His research interests are political and legal anthropology (especially modern law; legal pluralism; bureaucracy; identity and conflict research); Linguistic anthropology; moral anthropology; philosophical anthropology; Social and cultural theory. His research areas are southern Africa and Europe (Northern Ireland and Germany).
