Günther Schlee

Günther Schlee (born July 10, 1951 in Heide (Holstein) ) is a German ethnologist . He is one of the two founding directors of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle (Saale), which has existed since 1999 .

Life

Schlee studied ethnology, Romance studies and general linguistics at the University of Hamburg from 1970 to 1977 , where he received his doctorate in 1977. From 1980 to 1986 he worked as an assistant at the University of Bayreuth , where he completed his habilitation in 1986. From 1986 to 1999 he was professor of social anthropology at Bielefeld University . Schlee has been honorary professor at the University of Leipzig and the University of Halle / Wittenberg since 2001 and 2002 respectively. Schlee completed numerous longer research stays in Kenya (1975–1976 and 1978–1980) and in Ethiopia and Kenya in 1984.

His research topics are above all identity and difference, the change of alliances, kinship and friendship, his research areas are geographically in Sudan , Kenya, Somalia and southern Ethiopia. From 1999 to 2011 Schlee was editor of the Zeitschrift für Ethnologie .

Development cooperation and policy advice

Schlee worked several times in development cooperation and policy advice: between 1986 and 1989 he researched for the Kenya Range Management Handbook of the Ministry of Livestock Development of the Republic of Kenya, for which he also wrote articles. At the same time he worked for the Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). In 2002 he was involved in the Early Warning and Conflict Prevention workshop of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). The IGAD is a regional organization that includes Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya and Somalia. From 2002 to 2003 he worked as an expert for the Property Rights Commission of the Somalia Peace and Reconciliation Conference , which was also organized by IGAD.
