Old Bewick carvings

description

On the Bewick Moor, on the steep slope with a view of the River Till, there is a double hillfort from the Iron Age , which consists of two adjacent double semicircular walls . There are some Cairns to the northeast of the rock carvings .

Near the top of the hill east of the hill fort , the best petroglyphs can be found on two large boulders. A double bowl and several simple ones are surrounded by multiple ring loops or concentric rings. Bowl rows ( English cups ) mark two vertical surfaces of the digestion .

The most important stone is a large boulder , on the top of which there is not only natural hollows but also a deep porthole formed by human hands . Long grooves start and end in the bowl. Several rings and arches are connected to one another by grooves. A long artificial groove divides the rock carving. On the left, a pair of multi-ring cups form a unique figure eight shape. This stone also has a long row of bowls along the vertical surface.

There is another outcrop in the direction of the slope. The decorations are simpler here and there are five bowls with rings and a long, transverse groove. The rock has an uneven surface. There are several smaller outcrops in the area. The outer wall of the Hillfort features hewn stones that have been moved from their original locations.

Blawearie Cairn

The Blawearie Cairn is a Bronze Age cairn . It was excavated in 1866 and in the 1980s. It is one of many cairns in the region that contain stone boxes.
