List of domestic dogs

The Bobtail is an FCI recognized British breed of dog ( FCI Group 1, Section 1, Standard No. 16 ).

Origin and history

The name Bobtail means roughly " stump tail " in German . The official breed name is Old English Sheepdog (abbreviated: OES), i.e. Old English Sheepdog . The origin of the breed is unknown, but a relationship to herd guard dogs can be assumed.

description

Due to its lush fur, the bobtail looks larger and bulkier than it is: bitches have a shoulder height of at least 56 cm and males 61 cm, the FCI does not specify any weight. The hair is of good, rich, hard structure, not straight but shaggy and free of curls, in every shade of gray, gray or blue. The trunk and hind legs are monochrome throughout, with or without white “socks”. The undercoat forms a waterproof pile. The ears are small and flat; worn on the sides of the head. The stump tail is innate in some dogs, and was previously docked. The cropping is illegal in many European countries. The majority of dogs should therefore have a normal, inconspicuous tail.

use

Bobtails are used as house and companion dogs or as herding dogs .

Essence

As a former herd guard dog , the bobtail guards everything entrusted to him, but is more sociable than the majority of herd guard dogs. As a former working dog, he needs activity and plenty of exercise. He needs a consistent upbringing, but resents hard action; Nor should a person expect to follow everything immediately and unconditionally. The nature of this breed can be described as intelligent, social and adaptable.

health

The bobtail is affected by the MDR1 defect . Until 2011, no homozygous expression of the defect was known in a bobtail, but affected animals can develop hypersensitivity (see article on the MDR1 defect).
