Old Ghan Heritage Railway
Old Ghan Heritage Railway is a railway museum on the southern outskirts of Alice Springs .
The museum has an exhibition on the history of the railroad in general and the history of the Cape-gauge Great Northern Railway and the Ghan train in particular. Vehicles that were in use on the route are mainly shown in the outdoor area. These include vehicles made in Germany from 1951 from the re- tracked Trans-Australian , which were last used in The Ghan . A replica of the old train station by “Stuart” was built as a museum building .
The museum is located on the former route of the Great Northern Railway, about 10 km south of the passage of the former route through the pass of the MacDonald Ranges , which is located immediately south of the center of Alice Springs. This pass is now the new, in standard gauge running Central Australian Railway used. The narrow-gauge track was removed there. On the remainder of the route to Mt. Ertiva, which extends to the south, the museum offered museum transport with historical vehicles - both with steam and diesel traction. After the track was so badly washed out after a rain that it is no longer passable and a repair is estimated at A $ 4 million, but there is no money for it, this remaining operation is probably history.
