Olga Knudsen

Olga Knudsen (* 29. June 1865 in Følle ; † 26. September 1947 in Vejle ) was a Danish women's rights activist and Venstre - politician . She was the sister of Ivar Knudsen .

Life

Olga was born four years after her brother Ivar, the parents Jens Elsbert Knudsen (1826–1901) and Julie Vilhelmine Ronberg (1828–1888) ran grocery stores in Følle and Rønde .

In 1905, Olga Knudsen founded the Vejle Women's Association ( Vejle Kvindeforening ), one of the first women's associations in rural Denmark. In 1907 she founded the National League for Women's Suffrage ( Landsforbundet for Kvinders Valgret, LKV) with Elna Munch .

From 1908 to 1917 she sat on the board of the Vejler poor fund. In 1909, when women were allowed to vote in local elections for the first time, she was elected to the Vejle City Assembly for the Venstre party on a citizens' list. She was also a member of the council of the parish Vor Frelsers Sogn from 1917 to 1926. Olga Knudsen was a member of the first chamber of parliament ( Landsting ) in the first parliamentary election with women’s voting rights in 1918 . She mainly worked with social, health and local political issues. In 1928 she had to give way to a male party colleague. Knudsen also held various board positions, for example chairing the Mølholm Børnehjem children's home in Vejle until 1935.

At the age of 80, she withdrew from active politics. She passed away two years later.
