Olhos de Água is a village and a former municipality in the Algarve in southern Portugal .

history

Phoenicians and Carthaginians settled here. After the Roman conquest , they introduced fish processing here on a larger scale, with fish drying and salting systems. The place remained a small fishing village in the following centuries, belonging to Albufeira. In the 18th century it was used as an upstream lookout post in Albufeira's defense system.

It was only with the growth of Albufeira through mass tourism from the 1960s onwards that the neighboring Olhos de Água began to grow. In 1997 it became an independent municipality by being separated from the municipality of Albufeira.

With the territorial reform of 2013 , Olho de Água was merged with Albufeira to form the new municipality of Albufeira e Olhos de Água .

Olhos de Água was the seat of a municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Albufeira in the Faro district . On June 30, 2011, the Freguesia had 3309 inhabitants on an area of ​​52.6 km², which corresponds to a population density of 63 inhabitants / km².
