Olvenstedter pond

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Olvenstedter pond was a pond in the village of Alt Olvenstedt, which today belongs to the city of Magdeburg .

The pond was located in the center of the village and served to supply the population with fresh water. It stretched out narrowly along the street Am Teich . The area around the pond, a spring area that was later enclosed, is likely to have formed the center of Olvenstedt's settlement. The paved pond was so shallow that it was accessible. The shallow water meant that the water had to be cleaned twice a year. At times poplars were planted on the bank to beautify the complex , but later had to be removed because of the risk of overturning. Next to the pond was the syringe house of the Olvenstedt volunteer fire brigade , as well as a brick vault for extinguishing water, above which there was a pumping station.

In the course of the Second World War , the regular cleaning was not carried out, so that the Olvenstedter pond became neglected. The pond was then filled in. The syringe house and extinguishing water vault are still in place today.
