For the first time, a mixed doubles in table tennis will be played at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo . The venue is the Tōkyō Taiikukan , where a total of 16 doubles will play for the medals from July 25th to 27th.
This additional discipline is assessed differently. Some criticize the additional burden on the participants, who also compete individually and in a team. In contrast, the IOC would like to promote mixed gender equality .
qualification
A maximum of one pair per association may be entered. The player must be part of the team that will compete in these Olympic Games. In addition, the mixed must qualify in advance:
6 mixed are determined from continental qualification tournaments (Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, Latin America, Oceania) 4 mixed are played at the World Tour Grand Finals. 5 places result from platinum events of the World Tour 2020 (2 at the German Open, 2 at the Qatar Open, 1 at the Japan Open). 1 place is reserved for the host, i.e. Japan. Possible free places could arise if an association does not report a mixed despite qualification. These free places are filled via the mixed world rankings.

A maximum of 16 mixed will start. The pairs are initially placed according to their skill level. The first eight places will be drawn against places 9 to 16 in the first round, the round of 16.
