At the 1932 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid , a dog sledding competition was held as a demonstration competition for the first time . Even back then, dog sledding was an integral part of winter sports in Lake Placid and can look back on a long tradition. This sport is particularly popular in the USA ( Alaska ) and Canada , so it is not surprising that all participants came from these two states.

Back then, a dog sled team had to consist of seven dogs, with six animals arranged in pairs chasing after the lead dog. The driver stood on the sled pulled by the dogs. Among the 13 athletes, most of whom had already achieved several successes in the American Derby, Alaskan Derby or Canadian Derby , one woman also took part in this competition. Mrs. Milton brought her team to the finish successfully, but could only take the last place.

The competition lasted two days and was carried out according to the rules of the New England Sled Dog Club . According to these rules, the same course over 40.5 km had to be traveled on both days. The winner was determined by adding the times of both runs to an overall result. The rules also said that each dog started had to reach the finish, either on its own legs or in a sled. Due to the bad weather and snow conditions, it really happened that some dogs had to give up and were transported to the destination in their owners' sledges.
