Olympic Village (Beijing)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Beijing Olympic Village served as common accommodation for around 10,000 athletes , 6,000 coaches and journalists from all nations and regions for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing .

The Olympic Village is located very close to the main competition venues in the northwest of the city. The 66 hectare facility includes a restaurant for up to 6,000 guests, a library, a clinic, swimming pools, tennis courts, shopping centers and cafes. There are also five prayer rooms for Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, Jews and Hindus . Leisure options include karaoke , tea ceremonies, Chinese language courses and an internet café.

The 42 apartments are of a high standard with elevator, air conditioning and some ecological elements such as solar systems, rainwater harvesting and their own water treatment. In this way, around 60 percent of the usual energy consumption could be saved or sustainably replaced.

The Olympic village is protected by a wall and two security fences. Anyone entering the village must identify themselves and have their luggage checked.

After the Olympic Games, the apartments were converted and sold. The prices ranged from 20,000 to 30,000 yuan per square meter (equivalent to 2130 to 3200 euros). This amounts to just under 355,000 to 570,000 euros per apartment, which is considered a lot even in the booming real estate market in Beijing.
