Omegle (pronounced omigl [əʊmigʌl] ) is a website for chatting with a randomly selected, anonymous chat partner. It went online on March 25, 2009 and was created by Leif K-Brooks, then 18, from Brattleboro , Vermont, USA. The name Omegle is derived from the Greek letter Omega (Ω). This symbol can also be seen in the logo.

functionality

Omegle happens to connect two users in a "one-on-one" chat. They then face each other anonymously with the names “You” (Du) and “Stranger” (stranger) and can thus write to each other. Both sides can disconnect from the chat partner at any time.

History and present

Around 100 people were online at the same time when the service started. In April 2009 up to 3000 users were online at the same time and the site had 150,000 hits per day, in April 2010 over 6000 users were online at the same time. As of December 2014, the site had approximately 30,000 concurrent users daily, most of them from the United States .

Special features of the site are the mandatory chat names “You” and “Stranger”, the slogan “Talk to Strangers” and the closing message “Your conversational partner has disconnected” at the end of a chat, which has since been replaced by “Stranger has disconnected.” .

Omegle is one of the so-called anonymous or 1-on-1 chats. Similar approaches existed at AOL in the early 1990s .

There are no restrictions on age or interest and opinion groups. There is no filter against vulgar and obscene expressions. In a blog about security on the Internet, the author criticized: "On my first visit I was offered crack and cursed with a multitude of F-words". The BBC News pointed out that Omegle is not a site for younger users due to insults.

On the home page, the visitor is advised that children under the age of 13 should not use the site and that young people under the age of 18 should ask their legal guardians for permission. In addition, it is recommended not to behave inappropriately and to understand that human behavior cannot be controlled, but emphasizes that despite all this, one could meet interlocutors who behave inappropriately. Omegle relies on the user's own responsibility to end the call if they feel uncomfortable.

The Omegle brand is registered in Switzerland.

It is possible to trace the IP address of a chat partner during video chat.

Chat opportunities

Initially there was only a text chat, which was later expanded to include a video chat mode. A so-called “spy mode chat” has recently also existed. In the Spy Mode chat, a third person asks a question that the other two can discuss. The questioner can only read along, but not write. Conversely, it is also possible to discuss a question asked by another stranger with a stranger.

A feature that connects people with common interests has also been added. For this you simply have to enter your interests or similar and you will be connected to other chatters who have the same or similar interests. You can also use your “likes” from Facebook .

distribution

There are currently around half a million visitors a day. Thus, according to the Alexa Rank, omegle.com is ranked 2,411 worldwide (as of January 6, 2017) of the most popular websites.
