Omsund bru

Omsund bru is the name of two bridges that bridge the Omsund between the islands of Frei and Nordland in Kristiansund in Møre og Romsdal .

Data

The old Omsund Bridge is 281 meters long and is now only accessible to pedestrians.

The bridge started operating in April 1940 but did not officially open as World War II reached Norway that month. German bombers tried to blow up the bridge on April 22, 1940. The old Omsund Bridge withstood these attacks. Fifteen-year-old Ingolf Vatten, who was riding his bike over the bridge at the time, was killed.

In May 1940 the population of Kristiansund was evacuated over this bridge. The bridge was officially opened on April 24, 2005, 65 years after it was commissioned.

The new Omsund Bridge was opened next to the old bridge in 1981. She is part of Riksvei 70.
