On-board unit
On-Board Unit (OBU) is the English term for electronic vehicle equipment, which is mostly computer-based and has important internal control functions. Radio-based communication is often maintained with other mobile or stationary remote stations. The OBU itself can work as a transponder , i. H. the data exchange takes place automatically and only when requested by one of the devices involved.
Examples:
- Air traffic control in civil airspace surveillance.
- Automatic Identification System for security in maritime traffic .
- OBU as an essential part of the locomotives in the train control system European Train Control System (ETCS).
- Friend-foe detection in military aviation.
- On-board unit (toll system) for billing tolls ( truck toll ).
- Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System to avoid collisions in air traffic.
