Whiskey on the Rocks

On the rocks (literally translated: "On the stones / rocks") describes the way to prepare a drink with ice cubes by first putting a few ice cubes in a glass and then pouring the drink over the ice cubes (the rocks ). This definition is mainly used for alcoholic beverages; for example: whiskey on the rocks .

Some sources (e.g. Scottish whiskey manufacturers) claim the following as to the origin of this phrase: Before the invention of electric refrigerators and freezers, cold, smooth river pebbles were used to cool a drink. The ice-cold rivers and streams of Scotland in particular always have enough “rocks” ready for drinking pleasure.

In America , the term scotch on the rocks was introduced in the late 1940s. Before whiskey was mainly diluted with ice and soda water , which was no longer used from the middle of the 20th century. Some sources report dramatic decreases in soda sales.
