One night stand

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A one-night stand (from English one-night stand with the same meaning; originally for “one-time stage performance”) is a one-time sexual encounter. The term was adopted into German after it already had that meaning in English, and does not usually refer only to an encounter at night. Although the original intention is often not to enter into a prolonged emotional bond, this development is not excluded in principle. The focus is usually on fulfilling one's own sexual needs and those of the partner, but not building a relationship. The abbreviation ONS is common in the jargon of personals and contact forums on the Internet .

The person with whom such a sexual encounter takes place is also sometimes referred to using the term one-night stand .

A distinction is to be made between the one-night stand and the quickie , whose specificity lies in the brevity of the act and which also occurs between partners who are known to one another. If one of the participants is compensated for the sexual act, it is usually not a one-night stand, but prostitution . In principle, a blind date has nothing to do with a one-night stand, although it can lead to a comparable short sexual relationship.
