Online letter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Online letter (occasionally also electronic letter or digital letter ) is a generic term for electronic messages such as De-Mail and E-Postbrief . The aim of the online letter is to offer greater authenticity , better data protection and greater integrity than a conventional unencrypted e-mail , which can be compared to an electronic postcard.

In the long term, the goal is to establish a legally secure means of communication that should save costs compared to a normal letter due to the electronic transmission. If a fifth of all letters were sent electronically in 2015, the economy could save 315 to 630 million euros. The exact numbers depend on the price of an online letter, which is currently estimated at around 25 cents. However, the Federal Network Agency has already approved delivery costs of 39 cents.

status

While the E-Postbrief can already be used since July 14, 2010, De-Mail cannot yet be used. De-Mail addresses can already be registered. The legal security of online letters is not yet given.

A postal spokesman said about the relationship between E-Postbrief and De-Mail: "Deutsche Post supports the De-Mail initiative of the federal government and - when the law is in force - will of course apply for accreditation as a De-Mail provider -Postbrief already takes into account the standards required for this, as far as they are foreseeable according to the current draft law. "

Patent dispute

The US company RPost claims to have had patents for the authentication of electronic messages by third parties and electronic dispatch confirmation since 1996. RPost has sued the Swiss online mail provider Incamail for cease and desist from patent infringement. In a first decision, a relevant RPost patent was declared null and void on all points by the USPTO.
