OpenArena is a free clone of the popular, commercial computer game Quake III Arena . This project was made possible by the publication of the source code of the Quake 3 engine by the manufacturer id software . Thanks to this, the look and feel of both games is almost identical. The first test version was published under the GPL on August 19, 2005 , just one day after the source code was published and the last day of Quake Expo 2005.

Structure of the game

Right from the start, care was taken to ensure that the game only used free content . After a few months, it was decided to use the GPL for all content in order to avoid incompatibilities with other licenses. Due to this strong self-restriction, it was not possible to access the freeware content of the Quake 3 community. The necessary models , cards , sound effects etc. therefore had to be recreated for the most part.

Five game modes were taken directly from Quake 3: Free for All , Single Player Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Tournament and Capture the Flag , the game modes One Flag Capture, Overload and Harvester come from the add-on Team Arena . Four game modes have been added by developers OpenArenas : CTF Elimination, Last Man Standing, Domination and Double Domination. Elimination was taken from the mods Rocket Arena 3 and OSP . Unchanged from Quake 3, both the physics and the weapon and item system have been adopted.

Since the clone and the original are based on the same source code, it is often possible to use Quake 3 mods and maps under OpenArena , but the compatibility may vary.
