Opendbx is a free C - program library , a uniform and consistent interface for software developers to various database management systems provide. The aim of the function library, which was written in the C programming language, is efficient access to the interfaces developed by the database manufacturers themselves using a thin layer of abstraction. It comprises the set of functions implemented by all database-specific libraries, which can be supplemented by further function blocks.

In contrast to libraries such as ODBC , OpenDBX did away with the standardization of language resources in the SQL language in favor of speed and flexibility. This enables the application developer to use only standardized language elements and to use more efficient database-specific language constructs. In addition, databases that use a query language other than SQL can also be addressed.
