OpenBGPD is a Unix system service that implements the Border Gateway Protocol Version 4. This allows network components that are BGP-capable to exchange network routes with one another.
OpenBGPD is being developed as part of the OpenBSD project by Henning Brauer and Claudio Jeker. The design goals are for it to be safe and reliable, as well as efficient use of memory and a small source code size . The configuration language should be powerful and easy to use.
OpenOSPFD is another system service on the side of OpenBGPD, it implements the OSPF protocol. OpenBGPD and OpenOSPFD make it possible to use a computer as a network router. Both services are released as free software under the BSD license .
According to the annual reports of Euro-IX , openBGPd is used on 12 (2012) and 10 (2013, 2014) route servers , which makes up 17% (2012), 13% (2013) and 11% (2014) of the recorded route servers (40 Internet nodes with 70 (2012), 77 (2013) and 94 (2014) route servers).
From 2009 to 2012, AMS-IX , one of the largest Internet nodes in the world, used two OpenBGPD route servers; these were replaced by a solution based on Bird Internet Routing Daemon , as with other IXPs. OpenBGPD is still z. B. used by SwissIX and BCIX .
