Berlin Commercial Internet Exchange ( BCIX ) is a non-commercial Internet hub in Berlin.

Overview

BCIX eV is a registered association and does not work for profit. The aim of the BCIX is to promote and improve regional Internet data exchange in the Berlin-Brandenburg economic area for both regional and international service providers, content providers and carriers. BCIX was founded in March 2002 as a location initiative of smaller Berlin internet companies and has been operating the Berlin internet hub since 2002. In December 2003, DENIC connected its eleventh name server directly to the BCIX Internet hub in Berlin. In 2012, BCIX Management GmbH was spun off for technical operations. In November 2016, BCIX eV had 50 members, of which 44 members are connected to one of the peering locations in Berlin with bandwidths between 100Mbit / s and 100Gbit / s. Today (2019) the BCIX operates its own switch infrastructures in nine data centers in Berlin , which are connected to each other via a DarkFibre connection and DWDM systems with up to 300 Gbit / s. The data exchange between the providers takes place via IPv4 , with an increasing number of providers also using IPv6 for peering .

The number of members and the number of peering points more than doubled from 11/2016 to 07/2019, as of September 7, 2019, the BCIX has 114 peering points with a total bandwidth of more than 3200Gbps (3.2Tbps) .

technology

The distributed switch infrastructure enables Internet service providers to exchange data free of charge (“peering”). Customers can be connected via Gigabit Ethernet , 10 Gigabit Ethernet or 100 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The BCIX uses switches from Arista Networks and Dell Force10 Networks at the core colocation locations .
