Level 3 , founded in 1985, is a US subsidiary of CenturyLink and a communications services provider based in Broomfield , Colorado . The seat of the German subsidiary is Frankfurt am Main . Level 3 operates a large IP fiber optic network ( wide area network ) with a total length of around 120,000 km (as of 2007), which can be rented from other telecommunications companies.
The company is a so-called Tier 1 - Carrier and operates several backbones and four transatlantic connections from Europe to North America. The company has a homogeneous network worldwide, so it uses identical equipment at each location.
history
1985 to 2010
In 1985, construction company Peter Kiewit Sons' Inc established a subsidiary, Kiewit Diversified Group, to manage non-construction related areas of the company. This department was spun off in 1998 and renamed Level 3 Communications to underline the increased focus on telecommunications services. In the same year, the IPO on the New York NASDAQ was completed.
Genuity was acquired in 2003 and other companies were acquired between 2005 and 2007, including previous rivals WilTel Communications, Broadwing Corporation, Looking Glass Networks, Progress Telecom and Telcove.
In 2004 Level 3 took over ICG Communications' wholesale dial-up business for $ 35 million. In 2006, Level 3 took over the rest of ICG Communications for $ 163 million, including ICG's fiber optic network and the US nationwide Points of Presence .
2010 until today
On April 11, 2011, the company announced its offer to take over Tier 1 provider Global Crossing in a total takeover of shares. On August 5, 2011, the shareholders of both companies approved the takeover. The acquisition was completed on October 4th. On October 20, 2011, Level 3 Communications completed the reverse stock split and moved its listing from NASDAQ to the New York Stock Exchange .
According to a report in the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the company is listed in internal documents of the British secret service from 2009 as one of those telecommunications companies that “help or have to help the secret services with spying”. In August 2013, the company countered allegations that Level 3 had tapped data within Germany to be passed on to the American NSA with the statement that Level 3 did not grant any non-German government access to its telecommunications network or its facilities in Germany and had such access in the past not granted.
On November 1, 2017, Level 3 was acquired by CenturyLink .

The company operates a content delivery network that was acquired by Savvis in 2006. Level 3 makes Netflix Video and Apple Inc music content available over the Internet.
