OpenStat is a computer program for statistical data analysis ( statistics ). It is copyrighted by the author, William G. ("Bill") Miller, but is available free of charge and provides numerous univariate and multivariate analysis methods and simulations. It has a graphical user interface , but no script control.

Functions

The program offers numerous functions that are also known from commercial data analysis programs (see also the list of statistics software ). This includes:

  1. Data manipulation, including recoding, transposing and transforming multiple variables at the same time,
  2. Univariate and bivariate analysis functions and tests,
  3. Multivariate analysis functions,
  4. Simulations, etc. a. for probability distributions.

The output takes place in a text window or as a graphic, depending on the method selected. The program can read and output data sets in various formats, including plain text files, files from TeX and in its own binary format. OpenStat is completely menu-driven; there is no separate scripting language (as in R or SPSS ).

background

The developer, William Miller, was Professor of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University . After his retirement he developed OpenStat as, as he himself writes, “the result of an overactive hobby of a retired professor”. OpenStat was developed for users with very limited financial possibilities, Miller names students of the social sciences, but also users in developing countries as target groups.

reception

Miller cites numerous articles that OpenStat was used to produce. OpenStat is listed as the first entry on John C. Pelluzzo's popular "Free Statistical Software" web list in the "General Packages - Completely Free" section.
