OpenWeatherMap is an online service that provides a freely usable programming interface (API) for weather data, weather forecasts and historical weather data for developers of web applications and mobile devices. OpenWeatherMap uses OpenStreetMap to display weather maps.

API

OpenWeatherMap provides a free API for access to free weather data, weather forecasts and weather maps with information about clouds, wind speeds and air pressure. However, registration is required for this. In addition, paid service levels are offered. All weather data can be obtained in JSON , XML or HTML format.

Current weather data

Current weather data can be obtained in two ways: by using the city name (200,000 cities are available) or by using geographic coordinates. In the highest and most expensive service level, the data is updated every minute and every two hours for the free API.

Weather forecasts

The weather forecasts can also be queried by entering a city name or by entering geographic coordinates. A three-hour and a daily forecast are available. The three-hour forecast is available for the following five days, the daily forecast for the next 14 days.

Connection of a weather station

In principle, every user can connect their own weather station to the service. A weather station is connected in three steps:

  1. Registration of the weather station
  2. Connection to the API
  3. Data should be checked on the personal page OpenWeatherMap.org/my .
