OpenWebStart is a free application for starting and managing JNLP based Java applications. OpenWebStart is based on IcedTeaWeb and offers an implementation of the JNLP standard, which is defined in JSR-56 of the Java Community Process (JCP). The tool is being developed by Karakun AG.

After Oracle Web Start had discontinued a gap in the Java ecosystem, as many users still rely on JNLP. For this reason, the development of OpenWebStart was started.

The software is developed as open source and made available free of charge on the tool's website. The JNLP functionality of OpenWebStart is developed within the IcedTeaWeb project, which Red Hat handed over to the AdoptOpenJDK community and which is now being maintained by Red Hat and Karakun AG.

Functions

OpenWebStart maps the functionalities specified in JSR-56 on the basis of IcedTeaWeb. In addition, OpenWebStart includes a JVM manager that enables the administration of Java virtual machines ( JVM ). Since OpenWebStart works independently of the manufacturer, all JVMs based on OpenJDK such as AdoptOpenJDK or Amazon Coretto are supported. OpenWebStart can select a suitable JVM locally when starting a JNLP application or, depending on the user configuration and decision, download a suitable JVM from a dedicated server. This means that OpenWebStart can even be used without the need for an existing Java installation on a client PC.
