Günther Weidenbörner (born January 28, 1931 ) is a former German soccer player who played for the SC Rotation Leipzig from 1954 to 1958 in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of GDR football .

Athletic career

At the age of 23, Günther Weidenbörner began his senior league career in the 1954/55 season with the Betriebsportgemeinschaft (BSG) Einheit Ost Leipzig , after he had been promoted from the third-class district league to the GDR league with the SG Rotation Nordost Leipzig in the previous season . As a newcomer to the BSG unit, which was taken over by the newly founded SC Rotation Leipzig during the season , Weidenbörner immediately became a regular player. He played 23 of the 26 league games in which he was mainly called up as a right winger and with his eight goals was one of the most successful goal scorers in Leipzig. When, in the fall of 1955, a transition round to change to the calendar year rhythm was played based on the Soviet model, coach Heinz Krügel used the thirteen point games to experiment with the team line-up, so that Weidenbörner initially stormed as a center forward in his nine missions, but then stormed again on the right side . Five hits were enough for him to become the top scorer of the SC Rotation in the transition round. In the 1956 season, Weidenbörner was again a regular right winger, but was the object of substitutions or substitutions in eleven matches in his 21 league games. With his nine hits he was again the best shooter in his team. In the same position he also played in the 1957 season, but was only used regularly in his 17 games in the first half of the season, while he only made four appearances in the second half. His goal rate with only five goals was no longer his previous level. Consequently, Weidenbörner played his last league season in 1958. Dieter Engelhardt had already partially taken over his position in the previous season and has now finally ousted Weidenbörner. Coach Hans Studener used him in eight league games in the first half of the season in alternating storm positions, after which the Leipzig team came on matchday 19 in the away game against SC Empor Rostock Weidenbörner's last league appearance, which lasted only 25 minutes. He had already scored his last league goal on matchday 8 when he scored the 1-0 winner in the home game against SC activist Brieske-Senftenberg . At the age of 27, Günther Weidenbörner finished after five seasons in which he had played a total of 77 league games and scored 28 goals. He then let his football career end with the district league club Rotation 1950 Leipzig , later he was still game coach for the lower-class Leipzig team of the BSG unit Georg Schwarz.
