The Burgstall Wutzelstein , also called the Teunz Tower , is located in the Upper Palatinate municipality of Teunz in the Schwandorf district of Bavaria . The stables of the former hilltop castle are located approx. 2100 m east-northeast of Teunz and 3000 m north-northwest of Oberviechtach .
description
In a loop of the Murach , near a fork in an old road, a mountain tongue protruding to the northwest ends with the Wutzelstein rock that breaks off steeply to the northeast, northwest and southwest of the valley floor. Compared to the valley floor, the Burgstall is about 10 m higher and occupies a base area of 12 × 15 m. To the southeast it is set off from the rear by a semicircular ditch . Its depth is 2 m towards the castle stable and up to one meter towards the backland. To the north, the approach of another ditch is presented to this, which from the steep slope only extends a little way into the neck between Burgstall and the hinterland. Possibly the hill edge of the castle stable was protected with bushes ( Hagbefestigung ) or dry stone walls ; In the middle of the area there was presumably a permanent house , which did not consist of stone blocks, but at best of rubble stones , also of mud bricks and timber framework . This construction was sufficient as protection in the early High Middle Ages , when weapon technology ( crossbow ) could hardly be dangerous for such buildings with even a relatively low protection value.
history
Nothing more is known about the history of this castle stable. It is assumed, however, that this was the Teunz Tower Hill Castle. The facility protected the old road running through the Murach valley in the direction of Schönsee , which met below the Burgstall with the road connection Oberviechtach - Fuchsberg - Tännesberg . The farm yard belonging to the tower hill must have been in Teunz. Since Teunz is a Slavic name, the builder of the tower hill must have been a Slavic ministerial , possibly from the family of the Walpots , who was closely related to the Schweinfurt Nordgaugrafen .
