The Burgstall Altenschloss is a disused medieval hilltop castle on a mountain tongue in the Pfarrholz forest around 1250 meters west-southwest of the Catholic branch church Maria Dolorosa in Katzdorf in the Upper Palatinate community of Neunburg vorm Wald in Bavaria , Germany . It lies above the valley of the Berglingbach, a tributary of the Schwarzach . No historical or archaeological information is known about this castle; it is roughly dated to medieval times. Only a moat and two accompanying ramparts have survived from the complex; the site is protected as a ground monument number D-3-6640-0013: Medieval castle stables "Altenschloss" .
description
The castle stable of the Spornburg is 441.2 m above sea level. NN height on a broad mountain tongue protruding west into the steeply cut valley of the Berglingbach , which extends from the plateau to the east. The roughly triangular castle site is around 25 meters above the valley floor and drops very steeply, sometimes over vertical rock walls on three sides to the valley. These naturally very well protected sites did not require any further protection. Only in the east, where the area in front of the castle rises slightly, was an outwardly curved moat that is three to four meters deep. Both ends extend to the edge of the slope and still have mounds of spoil. At the southern end of the ditch, the ditch curves outwards and forms a slope terrace a few meters long below the edge of the slope. The arched ditch is accompanied by a flattened rampart on the inside and outside. The usable inner surface of the castle complex measured 45 × 32 meters. No foundation or other building remains have been preserved.
