The Üetliberg cemetery is a cemetery in the Friesenberg district in the south-west of Zurich . It is located at the foot of the Üetliberg in an elevated position above the city.

history

In order to relieve the Sihlfeld cemetery , the city of Zurich announced a competition for a new cemetery in the Friesenberg district in 1964. In 1972 the cemetery, which was built according to plans by the architect Werner Gantenbein and A. Stein, was inaugurated. In 1984 the cemetery was expanded.

Area and buildings

The Friesenberg district is located on steeply sloping terrain. Above the residential buildings, at the foot of the Üetliberg, the cemetery was built in the immediate vicinity of the Israelite cemetery Oberer Friesenberg . The cemetery has a rectangular floor plan and can be entered from all four sides. The main entrance is on the northwest side on Borrweg , where the administration and service buildings are also located. From there a wide path, designed by the sculptor Karl Schmid as a mosaic of cobblestones, leads to the abdication building in the southeastern area of the cemetery. In contrast to this wide path, the last third of which is bent towards the abdication building, all other paths, such as the floor plan of the cemetery, are laid out at right angles. The high-rise buildings of the cemetery show a clear facade divided into strips of glass and concrete. Due to its elevated position, the cemetery offers a comprehensive panorama over the city of Zurich and the Limmat Valley .
