Life

After attending school in Schiers, Gantenbein studied architecture at the ETH Zurich from 1945 to 1949 . Internships or work at Braillard (Lausanne), Hunziker (Brugg) and Burckhardt (Zurich) took place before or during the studies. Important university teachers for him were Friedrich Hess, Hans Hofmann and William Dunkel . After completing his studies, he also got an assistant position at the Dunkels chair and worked in his office. In 1953 he was able to set up his own business, he opened an office in Zurich with a branch in his hometown Buchs. In 1959 he was accepted into the BSA .

In the course of his career, Gantenbein had the privilege of planning the Swiss pavilions at world exhibitions twice, namely a structure made of hexagonal honeycombs for Expo 58 in Brussels and Expo '67 in Montréal.

The main focus of his work is in Buchs and Zurich. One of the defining features of Zurich's cityscape on the corner of Uraniastrasse and Bahnhofstrasse is the Modissa office building from 1975 with its curved metal facade , which received the Good Buildings Award and was included in the Zurich’s listed building inventory in 2013. The commercial building for SUISA (1962–67) and for the building yard in Oerlikon, which was also listed as a historical monument in 2013, also received the award for good buildings .
