The Burgstall Bodenwöhr is a lost medieval hilltop castle on the Schlossberg above and partly in the Hammerweiher , around 570 meters north-northeast of the Catholic parish church of St. Barbara in the municipality of Bodenwöhr in the Upper Palatinate district of Schwandorf in Bavaria , Germany . Only a moat has survived from the complex on a mountain spur . The castle site is protected as a ground monument number D-3-6739-0007: "Medieval castle stables".

History and description

No historical or archaeological information is known about this hillside castle , it is roughly dated as medieval . The castle site is referred to as the “Old Castle” on the map from 1769 by the chief vet Fuhrmann von Bodenwöhr. Later it was also called "Kellerl", after a brewery cellar that was built in the area of ​​the castle during the 19th century and that seriously disrupted the complex. In 1843 a stone column was erected on the castle site to commemorate the Bavarian constitution of 1818.

The now wooded Burgstall is located on the east bank of the Hammerweiher or on the western slope of the Schlossberg at around 375  m above sea level. NN height. A castle area with a diameter of around 18 meters is separated from the gently sloping mountain slope by a semicircular moat six to nine meters wide.
