Open Workbench on Sourceforge

The Open Workbench is a freely available project management software and an alternative to Microsoft Project . It supports project managers through the graphic preparation of the project process. The application can do this either via a prefabricated Gantt display, via network displays or via individually very finely adjustable modifications of these displays.

Open Workbench also determines information about the critical path . The project manager can automatically optimize his project plan using the Autoplan function. He can work forwards, i.e. from a given, fixed project start, or backwards, i.e. proceeding with a fixed end date. For company-wide use (with a central database), users usually need the fee-based project and portfolio management system Clarity from the manufacturer Computer Associates ; To a limited extent, however, mature multi-project management is also possible without the use of Clarity with a skilful approach .

Open Workbench presents deviations analyzes from a plan base that are easy to set up in a printable overview and, depending on the user's preferences, can also report differentiated cost and schedule deviations as well as resource overloads. If necessary, graphically very complex project representations can also be created: the percentage of completion, compliance with the original plan and many other parameters can be conveyed in the screen view and in the print version.

Free software

The source code of Open Workbench is freely available with exceptions. Until January 2011 there was a support forum on the manufacturer's website. The reason for the shutdown should have been security problems (information from a German partner).
