Opencast is an English term for open audio and video content, especially in the academic field. It is a suitcase word that brings together the terms “open” and “broadcast”, whereby “open” can refer to both open source and open access . Similar to Webcast , “Opencast” is designed as a terminological alternative to the podcast, which tends to be commercially available .

On the one hand, the term is used in connection with the Opencast Community , a global community of predominantly academic institutions and people who are involved in the production, management and distribution of audio and video material. On the other hand, "Opencast" stands for open source software for the management of audio and video content, in particular for the recording and distribution of courses.

Opencast Community

In the community established by UC Berkeley in 2007 , academic institutions, individuals and companies exchange experiences relating to the production, management and distribution of audiovisual content. The homepage is used for this, on the one hand, and various mailing lists and an IRC channel are available on the other. The goal of the community was to build an open source video management system especially for universities. Thirteen academic institutions from Europe and North America participated in this project. It was funded by the Hewlett Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation .

Opencast software

The software was initially called "Opencast Matterhorn" (probably because of the project kick-off meeting at ETH Zurich). Version 1.0 was published in 2010. The addition to the name “Matterhorn” was removed when the version jumped to 2.0 (summer 2015). The project also became part of the Apereo Foundation .
