The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is a philanthropic society that has sponsored projects in the social and developmental field since 1966. The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is the sixth largest philanthropic society in the United States with an estimated $ 8 billion in total assets. Every year, $ 200 million is invested in projects. William Hewlett , who started the foundation with his wife Flora and son Walter, co-founded the technology company Hewlett-Packard .

The Foundation is particularly active in the field of Open Educational Resources and was particularly involved in the launch of MIT OpenCourseWare , the pioneer in the field of free Internet courses , and in the Open Yale Courses .
